niversal Home Remote system (if equipped) is designed to replace up to three remote control transmitters (the devices you use to activate compatible devices such as garage doors and security system).
What You'll Learn
You’ll learn how to program your Universal Home Remote and some troubleshooting tips. The instructions here are for garage doors.
How It Works
You can program your Universal Home Remote to replace up to three garage door openers.
The system can be used with a compatible garage door opener. The system can’t be used with any garage door opener that doesn’t have the stop and reverse feature (including any garage door opener model manufactured before April 1, 1982).
- It may help to have another person close by to help you during this process.
- Find the three buttons inside your vehicle that make up the Universal Home Remote system. If equipped, they’re usually located in the overhead console. In the Corvette, they are located in the sun visor. You’ll see a HOUSE icon and indicator light above the three buttons.
- Get the handheld garage door controller that you want to replace using your vehicle’s Universal Home Remote. This is the opener that came with your garage door opener. For best results, make sure it has fresh batteries.
- Park outside, directly in line with and facing your garage door opener receiver.
- Your garage door may begin to move while you’re programming, so make sure there are no objects near the garage door.
To program:
- Hold the end of the handheld controller about 1 to 3 inches (3 to 8 cm) away from the Universal Home Remote system buttons inside your vehicle. Have the indicator light in view (the light just above the buttons and the HOUSE icon).
- At the same time, press and hold both your handheld controller button and one of the 3 Universal Home Remote system buttons (the one you want to use to operate your garage door). Don’t release either button until the indicator light in the vehicle goes from a slow to a rapid flashing light. Then release both buttons.
- Press and hold your newly programmed Universal Home Remote system button for 5 seconds. Watch the indicator light in your vehicle — and watch to see if your garage door opens or closes. Your vehicle’s button is “learning” to become a garage door controller. If your indicator light stays on continuously or your garage door opens or closes, programming is complete.
Troubleshooting:
- If your indicator light doesn’t stay on continuously or your garage door doesn’t move, try pressing and holding the newly programmed button for an additional 5 seconds. If the garage door moves, programming is complete.
- If your indicator light blinks rapidly for 2 seconds then changes to a solid light and your garage door doesn’t move, see the next section for your next step.Using the LEARN or SMART Button on a Garage Door Opener Motor
- If you’ve done the first three steps and the troubleshooting steps and your Universal Home Remote button isn’t programmed, you may need to unlock your garage door opener unit by using the LEARN or SMART button on your garage door opener unit. This button allows new transmitters to be trained to the opener.
Preparation:
- Read all steps before proceeding, as these steps are time-sensitive. You must complete all steps in this section before you start the steps below.
- It’s helpful to have someone nearby to help you.
- Find the LEARN or SMART button on your garage door unit. You can usually find it on the back, near the antenna wire that hangs down. The color, shape and location of the button vary by garage door opener manufacturer. You may need a small ladder to access it.
- In this step, it’s helpful to have one person who can press the Learn or Smart button and one person who can press the Universal Home Remote system button in the vehicle. Press and release the LEARN or SMART button on your garage door unit.
- Within 30 seconds of pressing the button, go inside your vehicle and press and hold your newly programmed Universal Home Remote system button for 2 seconds and then release it.
- If your garage door doesn’t move or the lamp on your garage door opener receiver doesn’t flash, press and hold the same Universal Home Remote System button (the one in your vehicle that you’re trying to program) a second time for 2 seconds and then release it.
- Again, if your garage door doesn’t move or your garage door’s lamp doesn’t flash, press and hold the same button a third time for 2 seconds and then release it.
- Your Universal Home Remote system should now activate the garage door.
Troubleshooting:
If your garage door opener unit has trouble learning a new transmitter, it may need to be reset to factory default settings. This process will erase ALL learned transmitters, including other vehicles you may own, all handheld transmitters, keypads on the outside of the garage, etc. Only perform this step as a last resort, as all these transmitters must be relearned to the system. To do this:
- Press and hold the LEARN or SMART button on your garage door opener for 10 seconds. This will reset your garage door opener.
- Once your opener is reset, press and release the LEARN or SMART button.
- Press your handheld transmitter button.
- Repeat steps 2 and 3 for each transmitter that needs to be relearned. This includes your Universal Home Remote system in each of your vehicles.
- Verify that your garage door fully opens and closes. In some instances, the fully closed or fully open position setting may be lost when the unit is reset.
Tips
- Read these instructions completely before you start.
- Have someone nearby that can help you.
- Don’t lose your handheld garage door opener. While you may no longer need to keep it in your vehicle, you will need it in order to program other vehicles in the future.
