The next generation Chevrolet Volt will debut at the 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Global Chevrolet Chief Marketing Officer Tim Mahoney said today. The 2016 Volt will build on the award-winning original’s strong foundation of technology innovation. Volt sales were up 13 percent in July and more than 65,000 have been sold since it was introduced – making it the best-selling plug-in passenger car in the U.S. market. “Volt is the perfect example of the ingenuity that drives everything we do at Chevrolet,” Mahoney said at the Center for Automotive Research Management Briefings. “Volt fully delivers on the promises of Find New Roads and will continue to provide consumers with the transportation solutions they need and deserve in the future.” Out of 12 cars, the Forward Collision Alert system integrated in the 2014 Chevrolet Volt earned it the Institute for Highway Safety’s 2014 Top Safety Pick award. Added to that, the Chevrolet Volt also earned a decent score in a tough small overlap front crash test, conducted by the IIHS. The amazing test results put this car at a better stance compared to its competitors, both in small and electric power train car segments. The IIHS senior vice president for vehicle research, Joe Nolan explained that the outstanding performance of the Chevrolet Volt puts it at the top among the most safest small cars. He also praised GM for coming up with such a strong small car, which was designed even before the crash tests were introduced. The Volt managed to secure the highest, ‘good’ rating in four out of the six IIHS tests. In the remaining two Structure category and the Restraints and Kinematics tests, the car earned a decent ‘acceptable’ rating. The vice president of GM Global Vehicle Safety explained how GM aims to keep up with the solid safety standards; he added that achieving the highest safety ratings in the IIHS tests is also highly valued by the customers. The overlap front crash test was introduced in 2012 and it simulates a collision with an object, like a tree, on the front corners of the vehicle at 40mph. This way, the front bumpers are avoided so that the energy from the impact is equally distributed throughout the car. According to the IIHS, the overlap front crash test is still considered one of the most challenging tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or the IIHS.
