Since its reveal at the 2013 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray has garnered the attention of auto aficionados from around the world. “The new C7 is something else” and “the car’s performance is simply awesome,” says Automobile Magazine who named the Corvette Stingray its Automobile of the Year on Saturday. Tadge Juechter, Corvette’s lead engineer, was also named Automobile’s Man of the Year. The news comes only days after the Corvette Stingray was named Performance Car of the Year by Road & Track. In its report, Automobile says the Corvette Stingray’s improved interior, 460 horsepower and the fuel-efficient 29 highway miles per gallon presents "a tremendous performance value.” "The automobile of the year has to set a standard," said Jean Jennings, editor-in-chief, Automobile Magazine. "It has to break a category in a way that really excites us," she said. To be eligible for the award, a car must be completely or substantially new for the new model year. This is the second major award for GM in recent weeks. The Cadillac CTS was named Motor Trend's Car of the Year earlier this month. This week at the 2013 LA Auto Show, the Corvette Stingray won several other awards including Motor Press Guild’s 2013 Innovation Vehicle of the Year (more than $29,000 category), Car & Driver’s 2014 10Best Cars, and Yahoo Auto’s 2014 Car of the Year. Tim Mahoney, global chief marketing officer for Chevrolet, said the awards add credibility to the vehicle. “It’s fantastic because it’s based on innovation,” Mahoney said after receiving the Motor Press Guild award. “That’s one of the things that the brand stands for is technology and innovation. So it’s a real honor to receive it.” The Corvette Stingray is a finalist for the North American Car of the Year award, which will be awarded in January at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
